Kia Keys Redesign

This project was created for a Digital Design & Fabrication class assignment focused on accessibility. The goal was to take an everyday object and redesign its form to make it more functional, inclusive, and user-friendly. I chose to redesign my Kia Soul car key, aiming to improve its ergonomics and ease of use.

My Role

 As the sole designer, I handled every stage of the process, from research and conceptual sketching to 3D modeling and refinement. I began by identifying usability issues with the current key design, then reimagined its form with accessibility and comfort as top priorities.

Process

Because of the nature of this assignment, I carefully broke this project up into 3 parts in order to maximize the accessibility I could bring to car keys.

  1. Research and Inspiration

 I started by observing how people interact with standard car keys and noting common frustrations — such as small buttons, slippery surfaces, and awkward shapes. I also researched accessible product design principles to understand how form, texture, and scale can enhance usability for people with limited dexterity or vision.

   2. Scanning and Modeling

 Using a caliper as well as contour gage (pictured), I was able to remodel my original car keys to use as a reference model. This allowed me to analyze proportions and design limitations before reworking the form. I then used Rhino to model the redesigned key, adjusting the overall shape to be more ergonomic and comfortable to hold.​

   3. Application and Refinement 

 In the new design, I made the key body larger and reshaped it for a better grip. The buttons were increased in size and slightly recessed to make them easier to locate and press without accidental activation. The form also features smoother edges and a tactile surface to make it easier to orient and handle without looking.

Outcome

This project helped me deepen my understanding of accessible product design and 3D modeling in Rhino. By combining physical tools with modeling, I was able to create a realistic, functional redesign that enhances usability and comfort. The final result demonstrates how thoughtful form design can make everyday objects more inclusive and intuitive to use.
